Working on the foredeck in strong winds
Weathering the storm at sea. Good harbours, bad harbours. Reefing with furling systems. Experiences on a North Atlantic cruise. The big strong wind special

Many crews prefer to stay in the harbour as soon as wind force 6 or more is forecast. Yet they often have yachts with which they can get through even heavy weather without any problems and, above all, without any danger. What is usually lacking is their own ability or self-confidence, their own experience or willing fellow sailors.

If you are then surprised by a little more wind than usual at sea - we are not talking about storms or even severe storms here - uncertainty often spreads on board. How should you react? Should you head for the next harbour or anchorage or should you stay at sea? And what should you do if the boat is perhaps not optimally prepared for difficult conditions?

These and many other questions on the subject of "Sailing safely in strong winds" are answered in the big strong wind special. It also includes the report of an experienced saltbucket who was able to refresh his wealth of experience, albeit involuntarily, during a stormy North Atlantic cruise.

The new YACHT (issue 1/2013) is now available in newsagents.
